Malad pipe burst: Rs 25L fine imposed on contractor

MUMBAI: The BMC will recover a fine of Rs 25 lakh from the contractor who has been held responsible for damaging the underground tunnel in Malad on February 12.

The decision was taken by the civic standing committee on Tuesday. Committee members also slammed officials of the hydraulic department for carrying out the repair work shoddily. The BMC is estimated to have incurred Rs 25 lakh for the work on the 30-mm-diameter tunnel at Malad’s Liberty Garden.

The civic body has temporarily resolved the problem by inserting a wooden plug to stop the leak. But it is not enough. A lot of water is still flowing out. The water gushing through the cracks—fear corporators—has started affecting the foundations of buildings in the vicinity. Standing committee chairman R Waikar said, “Such type of damages are expensive to fix.’’

The 12-km tunnel supplies 600 million litres of water daily to Malad, Goregaon, Kandivli and Jogeshwari.
