No court reprieve for BEST deputy GM

MUMBAI: A sessions judge on Saturday rejected the anticipatory bail application made by S A Puranik, suspended deputy general manager of BEST. A complaint was filed by the undertaking accusing Puranik of cheating and breach of trust. The undertaking has claimed that it had to incur losses to the tune of Rs 52.5 lakh due to Puranik.

The vigilance department of BEST conducted raids at six places where there was tampering of meters or theft of electricity in the recent past. The vigilance committee then made a report claiming large financial loss to BEST. Those who were raided were asked to make their presentation before the review committee of BEST.

The undertaking has alleged that Puranik, who was the chairman of the review committee, substantially brought down the claims, resulting in financial loss to BEST.

Puranik sought anticipatory bail after an FIR was registered against him. S V Marwadi, Puranik’s lawyer, denied that he was responsible for any loss to BEST. “Prima facie, no case was made out against Puranik. Also, he has not signed any documents,’’ he said.
