Municipality worries, either side of creek

The BMC’s top two earners are racing against time to meet their targets for the financial year. Over the next nine days, the property tax department needs to collect Rs 77 crore a day and the octroi department Rs 17 crore a day; if they don’t, it will be the first in the BMC’s history that they will have fallen short.
The BMC owes its status as the country’s richest civic body to collections by three departments, the third being development charges.
Octroi’s target for 2009-10 is Rs 4,450 crore, property tax’s Rs 2,877 crore, and they have respectively collected Rs 4,293 crore and Rs 2,177 crore so far. Officials are hopeful about reaching the octroi target but have given up on property tax after the original target was raised by nearly Rs 400 crore.
