MUMBAI: There’s more bad news in store for the parched metropolis. Civic officials supervising the repair work being carried out on the Tansa pipeline, which burst in Bhiwandi on Monday, have come across several leaks in the same pipe. “On Wednesday, BMC officials stumbled upon major leaks in the pipe at Pugaon, barely 4 km from the place where the Monday’s incident took place,’’ a source said. “We want to repair it immediately but don’t want to inconvenience citizens by imposing an additional water cut,’’ said Anil Diggikar, additional municipal commissioner.
“If it’s possible, we will try to carry out the repair work at the same time when work on the burst water tunnel in Malad is being undertaken. During this period we will draw water from Upper Vaitarna,’’ he added.
Hydraulic engineer Vinay Deshpande said that the “shocking leaks’’ needed urgent repairs. “Once the administration sanctions the work, we will initiate the damage-control measures. We will have to check if the water supply needs to be stopped. If not, we can go ahead with the work without a problem,’’ he said.
