Students turn go-karting dream into reality

MUMBAI: Five students of St Joseph’s Industrial Training Institute (ITI) wished to participate in the annual go-karting race at Chennai this year. What do they do to make this wish come true? They build a go-karting race car themselves.

“Students usually come up with innovative ideas during our Annual Day celebrations every year. But this year, one particular group of students came up with this brilliant plan,” said Richard Saldhana, head of the automobile department at the institute in Vidya Vihar.

The students first took their idea to their instructor, who then helped them research for some days online to come up with the best design possible for this race car. “After the research, it took us a week to order for the parts and within the next two weeks we managed to put it together,’’ said Melvin Numes, who along with another teacher Ashwin Patil instructed the kids throughout their project. After ordering for a chassis from the US, the wheels were ordered from Taiwan through a dealer in Bangalore. Handwork apart, this model cost the students Rs 55,000.
