Exhibition marks World Meteorological Day

Nearly 500 students and citizens, who visited the India Meteorological Department (IMD) office in Colaba, got an insight into the functioning of the weather bureau, at the one-day World Meteorological Day 2010 exhibition on Tuesday.
The exhibition celebrated the 60th year of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), a specialised body of the United Nations (UN) that came into existence on March 23, 1950, to study the state and behaviour of the earth’s atmosphere, its interaction with the oceans, the climate it produces and the resulting distribution of water resources. The WMO today has 189 member sates and territories including Maharashtra.
Students got a brief introduction on how the temperatures, humidity and cloud formation are measured and how the day-to-day observations are used for future predictions. They could also learn about the working of the seismological department of the IMD.
