Ex-MLA told to pay Rs 5.8L for vandalism

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Friday ordered former Shiv Sena MLA Sitaram Dalvi to pay a compensation of Rs 5.8 lakh — the remaining amount of the Rs 7.8-lakh — for vandalizing Hotel Intercontinental, Sahar, in January.
The HC was hearing Dalvi's plea, seeking a stay on a collector's order to pay more than Rs 7.8 lakh for vandalism during a Sena stir. Dalvi had already paid Rs 2 lakh and expressed his inability to pay the remaining amount. The HC said, "It is not a question of money. It's a matter of principle. People should know that nobody has the right to damage property. You can't go on and damaging property and ultimately we have to pay the tax."
