Carry cloth bags the next time you visit the market: BMC

Mumbai: If you are not in the habit of carrying a cloth bag when you go shopping for your groceries to a municipal market, it’s time you inculcate it now. He Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has kick started its ‘zero plastic’ drive in municipal markets and vendors will soon stop providing thin plastic bags.

The civic body, which runs over 100 municipal markets in the city, began its drive from the Gopi Tank municipal market in Byculla on Monday. The BMC will be implementing monetary fines on vendors who continue to distribute banned plastic bags (plastic bags below 50 microns)
Additional municipal commissioner Manisha Patankar-Mhaiskar said repeat offenders even stood a chance of losing their hawker license. The civic body has formed a vigilance squad comprising of market inspectors and vigilance officers, who will keep an eye on vendors.
