Civic body to get data for Census, ID cards

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation staffers are gearing up to collect data for the Centre’s unique identification card (UID) project. From May 1 to June 15, BMC workers will come knocking on the door of all Mumbaikars, including slum-dwellers (authorised and unauthorised), migrants and foreigners residing in Mumbai for more than six months.

This year, the door-to-door enumeration for the Census will be clubbed with collecting data for UIDs. This drive will also gather information for the national population register.
There are 18,500 enumerators and 3,087 supervisors from the BMC appointed for the job. Each enumerator will be paid Rs5,500 and officers will be paid Rs10,000 for 45 days.
“In case of unauthorised slums, the UID will not mean their structures are legalised. The card is just a proof of identification,” clarified Swadhin Kshatriya, municipal commissioner.
Regarding foreigners, Kshatriya said, “They will have to give details about where they have come from, the purpose of their visit and how long they will be staying in Mumbai.” The government is yet to come out with details of the documents to be submitted to the enumerators when they visit homes.
