85-yr-old doc killed in Virar

MUMBAI: An elderly doctor was found brutally murdered at his farmhouse at Virar early on Wednesday. Dr Bhalchandra Patankar (85) lived alone; a maid, who cooked and cleaned for him, was the only visitor. Police sources said Rs 5,000 in cash was missing from his house.

Patankar had been living in the sprawling farmhouse at Kanher village on the outskirts of Virar for several years. He was a widower and is survived by his three children, who live in Vile Parle. One of Patankar's sons, Milind, is also a doctor.

On Wednesday afternoon, when the maid came to work, she found the door locked. Despite repeated knocking, Patankar wouldn't open the door. The maid then called up his son, who asked her to call the cops. A team from the Virar police station soon reached the spot and broke open the door. They found Patankar's body in the innermost room, with hands and legs bound and mouth gagged with tape.
