Bird race: Fewer species spotted

MUMBAI: As Mumbaikars woke up to a lazy Sunday morning, 400-odd professional and amateur bird watchers across the city set their sights on the winged species at hotspots like the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Karnala Bird Sanctuary and even Sewri.

The sixth edition of the HSBC Mumbai Bird Race set a record for the maximum number of participants. Armed with binoculars, bird identification books and log sheets, bird watchers spent the entire day spotting feathered beauties.

However, disturbances in habitats affected the sighting this year as the maximum number of species sighted by a team was 145 against the 168 species that were spotted in 2008.
