Mumbai: Mumbai’s babudom is to be blamed for the road caving in at Kalachowkie on Monday. But for the civic body’s inordinate delay in taking up a crucial project, the incident could have been averted.
The collapse of portions of an old leaky drain is officially being cited as the trigger for the cave-in. A 100-year-old arch-shaped drainage network, which covers a stretch of 2.6km from Hindmata junction in Parel to Britannia Nullah at Reay Road, ran at a depth of 15 feet beneath the road surface.
